Much is known about Gustav Holst, the adult composer, but what about Gustav Holst the boy? Growing up in Cheltenham, what were the similarities and differences between his childhood and that of children now? What did he wear? What did he read? What did he see in his neighbourhood? What were his influences and why did he become a composer?
This loans box developed by the Holst Birthplace Museum includes: costume, toys, Victorian coins, a chamber pot, a conductor’s baton, a violin, CDs of his music and musical influences. There are suggestions for activities in the classroom and an information pack.
A map of a route for a short, safe walk around Gustav’s neighbourhood highlighting points of interest can be used in conjunction with a visit to the museum. Items from the box help to promote cross-curricular learning and creativity in the classroom as well as encouraging the development of a range of skills necessary for independent learning.
