The yard looks very much like it would have done in Holst’s childhood. The outside toilet is a pail closet - that is, a simple privy with a bucket under the fixed seat. These became popular from the 1860s as a cheap alternative to the WC, especially in working class districts.
There are yard games to play with: croquet, hoops and table skittles.
