This is probably the room in which Gustav Holst was born, and it is furnished in the style of the late 19th century. The water for washing would have been brought from the basement, there being no indoor plumbing in the rest of the house. (The lavatory was in the yard outside, where it may still be seen). By the 1870's beds were no longer four posters and canopied. Furnishings tended to be dark and somewhat cluttered. The large oil painting of a child on the wall above the fireplace is by Theodor von Holst of his nephew Matthias. There are also two studies by Theodor of his sister Constantia hanging in the room. Photographs on the mantelpiece show Holst's mother, father and himself as a child. |
